Left hemisphere enhancement of auditory activation in language impaired children

2019

| openaire: EC/H2020/641652/EU//ChildBrain Specific language impairment (SLI) is a developmental disorder linked to deficient auditory processing. In this magnetoencephalography (MEG) study we investigated a specific prolonged auditory response (N250m) that has been reported predominantly in children and is associated with level of language skills. We recorded auditory responses evoked by sine-wave tones presented alternately to the right and left ear of 9–10-year-old children with SLI (n = 10) and children with typical language development (n = 10). Source analysis was used to isolate the N250m response in the left and right hemisphere. In children with language impairment left-hemisphere …

Dysfunction of attention switching networks in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

2019

Objective To localise and characterise changes in cognitive networks in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) using source analysis of mismatch negativity (MMN) waveforms. Rationale The MMN waveform has an increased average delay in ALS. MMN has been attributed to change detection and involuntary attention switching. This therefore indicates pathological impairment of the neural network components which generate these functions. Source localisation can mitigate the poor spatial resolution of sensor-level EEG analysis by associating the sensor-level signals to the contributing brain sources. The functional activity in each generating source can therefore be individually measured and investigat…

EVALUATION OF AUDITORY CORTICAL PLASTICITY FROM FIRST AMPLIFICATION TO ONE YEAR OF HEARING AID USE: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AIDED CORTICAL AUDITORY …

2021

Over the last decade, aided cortical auditory evoked potentials (ACAEPs) have continued to be a focus of interest due to the lack of adequate tools to objectively assess cortical auditory activity in response to amplified stimuli. The majority of authors have investigated the direct relationship between behavioral thresholds and ACAEPs and the evolution of ACAEP waves among children with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) undergoing rehabilitation. In contrast, scarce data are available regarding changes in ACAEPs over time in adult hearing aid users, particularly in relation to speech perception outcomes. The main goal of this project was to investigate the relationship between ACAEPs and s…

AUDITORY EVOKED POTENTIALS AND VISUAL EVOKED POTENTIALS: A HELPFUL TEST IN THE DIAGNOSIS AND FOLLOW UP OF KAWASAKI DISEASE

2018

Introduction: Kawasaki disease is a systemic vasculitis affecting mainly children; the most serious complications are coronary artery lesions (CAL). Nonetheless, the spectrum of complications involves all the vascular districts, such as the eyes, skin, kidneys, gallbladder, liver, central nervous system. Sensorineural hearing loss is a low diagnosed complication of KD, however, it may be permanent. Objectives: Auditory evoked potentials (ABR) and visual evoked potentials (VEPs) are useful in evaluating children without auditory and/or visual symptoms but with diseases that could sub clinically involve these functions. Methods: We enrolled 52 children (31 M, 21 F; age: 3 months-10 years) wit…

Auditory event-related potentials in separating patients with depressive disorders and non-depressed controls: A narrative review

2021

This narrative review brings together the findings regarding the differences in the auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) between patients with depressive disorder and non-depressed control subjects. These studies' results can inform us of the possible alterations in sensory-cognitive processing in depressive disorders and the potential of using these ERPs in clinical applications. Auditory P3, mismatch negativity (MMN) and loudness dependence of auditory evoked potentials (LDAEP) were the subjects of the investigation. A search in PubMed yielded 84 studies. The findings of the reviewed studies were not highly consistent, but some patterns could be identified. For auditory P3b, the commo…

Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials and Visual Potentials in Kawasaki Disease: An Observational Monocentric Study

2020

Background: Kawasaki Disease is a systemic vasculitis, particularly involving coronary arteries. Rare involvement of other vascular districts is described, as central nervous system arteries, leading to a vasculitic neuropathy. Sensorineural hearing loss and alterations of evoked potentials are uncommonly reported complications. Methods: In an observational monocentric study, 59 children (37 males; 22 females; mean age: 2.7 ± 2.2 years) with documented Kawasaki Disease were enrolled. No risk factors for hearing loss and/or neurological impairment were identified in the cohort. Brainstem auditory evoked potentials and visual evoked potentials were correlated with clinical, hamatological and r…
